This essay provides an overview of the theoretical foundations underlying Synthetica, a research program in epistemic technology—computational systems designed to augment human reasoning rather than replace it. It serves as an intellectual companion to the Synthetica Training Corpus, a curated collection of 400+ texts across seven domains of scholarship.
1. Introduction: The Problem of Distributed Rationality
Human beings reason together. This is not merely an empirical observation but a constitutive feature of how rational inquiry works. Scientific knowledge emerges not from individual genius but from institutionalized processes of peer review, replication, and debate. Legal judgments arise from adversarial proceedings that force engagement with opposing arguments. Democratic governance—at its best—channels competing interests through deliberative processes that produce decisions participants can accept as legitimate even when they disagree.
These institutional arrangements solve a problem that individual cognition cannot: the problem of epistemic partiality. Each of us reasons from a particular location in conceptual space, shaped by our training, our assumptions, our interests, and our limitations. We see some things clearly and miss others entirely. The genius of institutional rationality is that it distributes the cognitive labor of inquiry across many minds, each contributing perspectives that correct for the blind spots of others.
But these institutions are under strain. Peer review struggles with volume: top journals reject over 90% of submissions while reviewers burn out. Legal systems face backlogs that delay justice for years. Democratic deliberation has fragmented into polarized camps that rarely engage each other's strongest arguments. The replication crisis revealed systematic failures in how we evaluate evidence. Across domains, the infrastructure for collective reasoning is failing to keep pace with the complexity of the problems we face.
Synthetica emerges from a specific diagnosis of this situation: the problem is not that we lack information, but that we lack visibility into argument structure. We cannot easily see what claims a complex document is making, what evidence supports those claims, which objections have been addressed and which ignored, whose perspectives are represented and whose are absent. Without this structural visibility, collective reasoning becomes a fog of assertion and counter-assertion.
The research program we call epistemic technology aims to build computational infrastructure that makes argument structure legible—first for individual researchers, and eventually for the collective reasoning processes through which societies coordinate under disagreement. This essay surveys the theoretical foundations that inform this work.
2. What Epistemic Technology Is and Is Not
Before proceeding, we must distinguish epistemic technology from adjacent projects with which it might be confused.
Epistemic technology is not artificial general intelligence. We are not trying to build systems that reason autonomously or replace human judgment. The goal is augmentation, not automation—extending human cognitive capacities rather than substituting for them.
Epistemic technology is not information retrieval. Finding relevant documents is a solved problem; vector embeddings and semantic search have made topic-based discovery remarkably effective. But knowing what documents are about is different from knowing what they argue. A paper might be highly relevant to your topic while being entirely orthogonal to your inferential concerns.
Epistemic technology is not fact-checking. Determining whether individual claims are true or false matters, but it operates at the wrong unit of analysis. Arguments fail not only when they contain false premises but when they ignore objections, rely on unacknowledged assumptions, or represent only some stakeholder perspectives. Structural failures cannot be detected by checking individual facts.
What epistemic technology is can be stated simply: infrastructure that makes the structure of arguments visible and tractable. This includes parsing claims from evidence, mapping inferential relationships, tracking which objections have been engaged and which dismissed, monitoring source coverage and perspectival diversity, and calibrating these assessments against domain-specific standards for what counts as adequate treatment.
The theoretical question that animates this research is: what must we understand about reasoning, argumentation, cognition, and computation to build such infrastructure well?
Part I: Philosophical Foundations
3. Philosophy of Science and the Visibility of Assumptions
The philosophy of science teaches us that inquiry is always conducted from within a framework—a set of background assumptions, methodological commitments, and theoretical orientations that shape what questions we ask, what evidence we count as relevant, and what forms of explanation we find satisfying. Kuhn's (1962) analysis of paradigms showed how normal science operates within taken-for-granted frameworks that determine both the problems worth solving and the standards for acceptable solutions. Lakatos (1970) refined this picture with his account of research programmes, which have a "hard core" of commitments that are protected from falsification and a "protective belt" of auxiliary hypotheses that can be modified in response to anomalies.
For epistemic technology, the key insight is that framework assumptions are often invisible to those who hold them. A neoclassical economist may not notice the assumption that agents are rational maximizers because this assumption is so deeply embedded in the tools and training of the discipline. A policy analyst trained in cost-benefit analysis may not see the utilitarian commitments that make such analysis seem natural. The task of epistemic technology is to surface these framework assumptions—not to judge them as right or wrong, but to make them visible as assumptions rather than as the furniture of the world.
Quine's (1951) holism suggests why this matters: our beliefs form an interconnected web, and any particular claim gains its meaning and justification from its connections to other claims. When we examine an argument, we are not just assessing individual premises but the entire inferential network in which those premises are embedded. Synthetica's "lens architecture" is designed to probe different aspects of this network: evidential sufficiency, causal assumptions, stakeholder representation, methodological commitments. Each lens asks a different question about the web of belief that supports an argument.
The tradition of scientific pluralism (Chang 2012; Cartwright 1999; Longino 2019) provides further warrant for this approach. If there are multiple legitimate ways to carve up domains of inquiry, multiple methodological approaches that illuminate different aspects of complex phenomena, then good epistemic technology should help users see their work from multiple perspectives rather than privileging any single approach. The goal is not to tell researchers what to think but to show them what their current thinking assumes.
4. Mereology and the Structure of Arguments
Mereology—the logic of parts and wholes—may seem remote from practical concerns about reasoning tools. But arguments have mereological structure: they are composed of claims that stand in part-whole relations to larger arguments, which are themselves embedded in research programs and disciplinary traditions. Understanding this structure matters for representing arguments computationally.
Husserl's (1901) distinction between dependent and independent parts illuminates a crucial feature of argumentative structure: some components of an argument can stand alone (a claim that is independently evidenced), while others are essentially dependent (an inference that only goes through given other assumptions). Synthetica's representation of argument structure tracks these dependencies: which claims rely on which assumptions, which inferences require which background conditions.
The concept of holons from systems theory (Koestler 1967) captures how arguments exist simultaneously as wholes (containing sub-arguments and supporting claims) and as parts (contributing to larger research programs and disciplinary conversations). Good epistemic technology must operate at multiple scales: examining the micro-structure of individual inferences while also tracking how an argument positions itself within broader intellectual landscapes.
5. Argumentation Theory and the Standards for Serious Engagement
Toulmin's (1958) model of argument—claim, data, warrant, backing, qualifier, rebuttal—remains foundational for any attempt to represent argument structure computationally. But Toulmin's deeper contribution was showing that argumentative standards are field-dependent: what counts as good evidence, legitimate inference, and adequate engagement with objections varies across domains. A mathematical proof operates under different standards than a historical interpretation or a policy recommendation.
This field-dependence creates a challenge for epistemic technology. Generic tools that apply the same standards everywhere will fail to capture what matters in particular domains. Synthetica addresses this through domain-specific calibration: different lens configurations for policy analysis, investigative journalism, and economics research, each calibrated against the actual standards of quality work in that field.
Walton's (2008) catalog of argumentation schemes provides a vocabulary for the diversity of inferential moves that arguments employ: argument from analogy, argument from authority, argument from consequences, causal arguments, and dozens more. Each scheme has characteristic critical questions—ways it can fail that are specific to the type of inference being made. Epistemic technology that tracks argumentation schemes can generate targeted questions: not just "is this argument good?" but "this is an argument from expert opinion—have you established the expert's credentials in this specific domain?"
The pragma-dialectical tradition (van Eemeren & Grootendorst 2004) emphasizes that argumentation is a social practice aimed at resolving differences of opinion. Arguments are not just logical structures but moves in a dialogue, subject to procedural norms about fair engagement. Synthetica's attention to objection tracking and steelmanning reflects this dialogical conception: good arguments anticipate and address the strongest versions of opposing views.
Part II: Computational and Formal Methods
6. Computational Argumentation and the Feasibility of Automatic Analysis
The field of computational argumentation has made substantial progress on automatic argument mining: identifying claims and premises in text, classifying argumentative relationships, assessing argument quality. Lawrence and Reed's (2020) survey documents the state of the art, while noting persistent challenges with domain transfer and the handling of implicit premises.
For Synthetica, this literature establishes both possibility and limits. Argument extraction at scale is feasible—large language models have dramatically improved performance on argumentation tasks (Chen et al. 2024). But accuracy remains imperfect, and domain-specific calibration is essential. Our approach treats LLM-based argument extraction as scaffolding for human judgment rather than as an autonomous system: the tool surfaces potential gaps for human evaluation rather than rendering verdicts.
Dung's (1995) abstract argumentation frameworks provide a formal foundation for reasoning about argument acceptability under attack. When multiple arguments conflict, which should be accepted? Dung showed that different "semantics"—grounded, preferred, stable—give different answers, and that the choice among them depends on what we want our reasoning to accomplish. This formalism informs how Synthetica handles conflicting claims and unresolved objections.
7. Network Science and the Topology of Knowledge
Network science offers tools for analyzing the structure of knowledge at scale. Citation networks reveal how ideas propagate through disciplines; co-authorship networks illuminate the social structure of scientific collaboration; semantic networks map conceptual relationships. Barabási's (2016) synthesis of this field shows how network topology—the pattern of connections—shapes dynamics like information flow, consensus formation, and vulnerability to disruption.
For epistemic technology, network representations complement the mereological structure of individual arguments. A single argument exists within a network of related arguments, supporting evidence, critical responses, and downstream implications. Synthetica's source ecosystem lens draws on network concepts: not just how many sources support a claim, but how those sources are distributed across research programs, institutions, and perspectives.
8. Game Theory and Strategic Dimensions of Argumentation
Argumentation has a strategic dimension that pure logic ignores. Participants in debates have interests; they frame arguments to persuade particular audiences; they anticipate responses and position their claims accordingly. Game theory provides tools for analyzing these strategic interactions.
Ostrom's (1990) work on governing commons—shared resources that require collective management—illustrates how institutional design shapes the incentives for cooperation versus defection. Scientific communities are commons of a sort: the shared resource of credibility depends on norms of honest reporting, fair engagement with criticism, and acknowledgment of uncertainty. When these norms break down—when strategic publication pressures incentivize p-hacking and file-drawer effects—the commons degrades.
Epistemic technology can help by making departures from norms visible. If serious objection engagement requires substantive response (not just acknowledgment and dismissal), tools that measure response length and depth can surface cases where engagement standards have not been met.
9. Causal Reasoning and Interventionist Frameworks
Pearl's (2009) work on causation revolutionized how we think about causal inference by distinguishing causal claims from mere statistical associations and providing formal tools for reasoning about interventions. Woodward's (2003) interventionist theory of causation complements this by showing how causal claims are fundamentally about "what would happen if" certain variables were manipulated.
For argument analysis, this literature is essential because so many policy arguments are causal: "this intervention will produce these effects," "this factor caused this outcome." Synthetica's causal architecture lens draws on interventionist frameworks to assess whether causal claims in arguments have been adequately supported. Does the argument identify mechanisms? Does it address potential confounders? Does it consider how proposed interventions might backfire through feedback effects?
Part III: Cognitive Science and the Psychology of Reasoning
10. System 1 and System 2: Why Deliberation Doesn't Scale
Kahneman's (2011) distinction between System 1 (fast, automatic, intuitive) and System 2 (slow, effortful, deliberative) is foundational for understanding both the promise and limits of epistemic technology. Deliberative reasoning—the careful, explicit, step-by-step evaluation of arguments—is a System 2 process. It requires attention, depletes cognitive resources, and can only be sustained for limited periods.
This has profound implications. The institutions of collective reasoning—peer review, adversarial legal proceedings, democratic deliberation—can be understood as social technologies for distributing System 2 labor. No single individual can deliberatively evaluate all the arguments relevant to a complex policy question; but if the labor is distributed across many reviewers, each contributing their expertise, the collective can accomplish what no individual could.
When these institutions fail, they often fail because System 2 capacity is exceeded. Reviewers cannot thoughtfully evaluate all the manuscripts they receive. Voters cannot carefully reason through all the policy implications of their choices. The deliberative infrastructure is overwhelmed.
This analysis clarifies what epistemic technology should aim to do: scaffold System 2 reasoning so that deliberation becomes tractable at scales that would otherwise exceed cognitive capacity. Not replacing deliberation with faster but shallower processing, but making deliberation itself more efficient by externalizing some of its cognitive demands.
11. Extended Cognition and Cognitive Artifacts
The extended mind thesis (Clark & Chalmers 1998) argues that cognitive processes can extend beyond the boundaries of brain and body to include external resources—notebooks, calculators, other people. When external resources are reliably available, automatically endorsed, and easily accessible, they can function as genuine parts of a cognitive system rather than mere inputs to cognition.
This framing is crucial for epistemic technology. We are not building tools that provide information to a cognition that remains bounded by the skull; we are building cognitive artifacts that can become genuine extensions of reasoning capacity. The Thinking Space—Synthetica's canvas environment for tracking claims, evidence, and tensions—is designed as an extension of working memory: holding argument structure externally so that cognitive resources can be devoted to evaluation rather than maintenance.
Clark's later work on predictive processing (2013) deepens this picture. If cognition is fundamentally prediction—generating models of the world and updating them in response to prediction errors—then external representations function as scaffolding that constrains and guides the prediction process. A diagram doesn't just store information; it changes the computational problem by making certain inferences perceptually obvious.
12. Epistemic Actions and the Intelligence of Space
Kirsh and Maglio's (1994) distinction between epistemic and pragmatic actions illuminates how external manipulation can serve cognitive purposes. Pragmatic actions change the world to achieve goals; epistemic actions change the world to change one's own cognitive state. The classic example: Tetris players rotate pieces on-screen rather than mentally because physical rotation is computationally cheaper than mental rotation.
For interface design, this suggests that epistemic technology should support epistemic actions—external manipulations that aid reasoning. Moving claims around on a canvas, drawing connection lines, clustering related ideas spatially—these are thinking moves, not just organizational choices. Synthetica's Thinking Space is designed as an epistemic action space: an environment where users think by manipulating external representations.
Hutchins's (1995) work on distributed cognition extends this analysis to teams. When naval navigation crews coordinate using charts, instruments, and verbal protocols, the cognitive system is the entire assemblage—not any individual navigator. Representing argument structure externally makes the state of collective reasoning visible, enabling coordination that would be impossible if reasoning remained locked in individual minds.
13. Affordances and Ecological Interface Design
Gibson's (1979) concept of affordances—what the environment offers for action—transforms how we think about interface design. Affordances are relational: they exist between an agent with certain capabilities and an environment with certain features. A handle affords grasping for creatures with hands; a cliff affords falling for creatures subject to gravity.
Norman's (2013) application of this concept to design emphasizes that interfaces should make their affordances visible. A button should look pressable; a slider should look slideable. Signifiers—perceptible cues about what actions are possible—should guide appropriate interaction.
For epistemic technology, the design implication is that interfaces should afford good reasoning moves. A claim lacking evidence should visually invite the action of seeking evidence. A gap in source coverage should look like something to fill. An unaddressed objection should create perceptible tension that motivates response. The Synthetica interface aims to make the affordances for strengthening arguments as perceptually salient as a handle is for grasping.
Vicente and Rasmussen's (1992) ecological interface design takes this further for complex work domains. Their principle: the interface should make the constraints of the domain visible so that operators can perceive the state of the system directly rather than inferring it from indicators. For argument analysis, this means making argument structure itself perceptually available—not as a list of issues but as a landscape whose shape reveals its strengths and weaknesses.
14. Flow, Micro-Goals, and Sustainable Deliberation
Csikszentmihalyi's (1990) research on flow states identifies conditions under which demanding cognitive work becomes intrinsically rewarding: clear goals, immediate feedback, challenge matched to skill. When these conditions align, attention is absorbed and effort feels effortless.
Deliberative evaluation of complex arguments rarely produces flow. The goals are vague ("make this better"), feedback is delayed (you won't know if reviewers accept your argument for months), and the challenge is often overwhelming (fifty sources, hundreds of claims, countless potential objections).
Epistemic technology can restructure the task to enable flow. The lens architecture decomposes the diffuse challenge of "evaluate this argument" into specific, tractable sub-tasks: "assess source diversity," "check evidential sufficiency for this claim," "evaluate engagement with this objection." Each sub-task has clear criteria, provides immediate feedback, and offers challenge at an appropriate level. The deliberative work remains, but it becomes flowable.
15. Social Cognition and Collective Intelligence
Tomasello's (1999, 2014) research on shared intentionality shows how human cognition is fundamentally social: we think together in ways that other species do not. Joint attention, shared goals, collective commitments—these structures enable forms of coordination and cumulative culture that exceed what individual cognition could achieve.
Page's (2007) formal work on diversity and problem-solving demonstrates that under specified conditions, diverse groups outperform homogeneous groups of higher-ability individuals. The mechanism is perspectival: different viewpoints contribute different local information and different ways of representing problems. Epistemic technology that helps users engage with perspectives they might otherwise miss is, in effect, simulating the benefits of diversity for individual reasoners.
The Persona Teams feature in Synthetica operationalizes this insight. By structuring analysis through distinct perspectival frames—Traditionalist, Modernist, Progressive, Integral—users gain exposure to the kinds of questions and concerns that would arise in a genuinely diverse intellectual community.
Part IV: Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models
16. What LLMs Are and Are Not
The recent capabilities of large language models have created both opportunities and confusions for epistemic technology. LLMs can extract argument structure, identify claims and evidence, generate objections, and assess engagement quality. They cannot, however, reason in the normative sense: they predict likely continuations rather than evaluating valid inferences.
Shanahan's (2023) careful analysis provides the right conceptual framework. LLMs should be understood as simulacra: systems that can simulate entities with beliefs, knowledge, and understanding without necessarily possessing those properties themselves. When an LLM identifies an objection that an argument hasn't addressed, it is simulating what a critical reader would notice—and this simulation can be useful even if we remain uncertain about whether the system "understands" anything.
Buckner's (2024) book From Deep Learning to Rational Machines offers a deeper philosophical analysis. He argues that deep learning systems instantiate a form of empiricist epistemology: they extract statistical regularities from experience in ways that vindicate (a sophisticated version of) Humean associationism. They are powerful pattern-matchers, but pattern-matching is not the same as inference-tracking.
This analysis clarifies Synthetica's hybrid approach. LLMs provide the pattern-matching capacity to identify likely gaps, underevidenced claims, and unaddressed objections. But the normative structure—what counts as adequate evidence, which objections must be addressed, what standards of engagement apply—comes from the calibrated lens architecture, which encodes domain-specific norms derived from philosophy of science, argumentation theory, and analysis of exemplary work in target fields.
17. The Language-Thought Dissociation
Mahowald et al.'s (2024) research on dissociating language and thought in LLMs provides crucial evidence for Synthetica's design. They show that formal linguistic competence (fluent, grammatical text generation) and functional competence (reasoning, world knowledge, inference) are separable in LLMs: systems can generate fluent text that fails at reasoning, and can produce good reasoning in disfluent form.
This dissociation supports our architectural decision to separate argument extraction (which LLMs can perform well) from argument evaluation (which requires normative frameworks that LLMs don't natively possess). The lenses provide the evaluation structure; the LLMs provide the natural language processing capacity to apply that structure to arbitrary text.
18. Human-AI Complementarity
Bansal et al.'s (2021) research on human-AI teams identifies when hybrid systems outperform either humans or AI alone. The key finding: complementarity requires appropriate reliance—humans knowing when to trust AI judgments and when to override them. Blind trust leads to automation bias; excessive skepticism forfeits the benefits of AI assistance.
For epistemic technology, this means that AI outputs must be interpretable enough for users to exercise appropriate judgment. When Synthetica flags an objection as inadequately addressed, users need to understand why—to see the reasoning behind the assessment—so they can determine whether the flag is warranted or represents a false positive.
The design principle is scaffolding, not replacing. The tool surfaces candidates for attention; the user decides what to do about them. The cognitive labor remains human; the tool makes that labor more targeted and efficient.
Part V: Human-Computer Interaction and Intelligence Augmentation
19. The Vision of Augmentation
Engelbart's (1962) "Augmenting Human Intellect" and Licklider's (1960) "Man-Computer Symbiosis" established the founding vision for our field: computers as tools for extending human cognitive capacity rather than automating human tasks away. Engelbart was explicit that his goal was not artificial intelligence but "intelligence amplification"—using technology to make human beings more capable thinkers.
This vision remains the orienting ideal for epistemic technology. We are not trying to build systems that evaluate arguments autonomously; we are building systems that help humans evaluate arguments more thoroughly, more efficiently, and more self-critically than they otherwise would.
Bush's (1945) Memex concept anticipated many features we now take for granted—hyperlinks, annotation, personalized information trails—while pointing toward capacities we still lack. Bush imagined researchers building "trails" through the literature that others could follow and extend. Synthetica's argument representations are, in a sense, trails through inferential space: maps of how conclusions connect to premises, where objections have been addressed, which perspectives have contributed.
20. Thinking with Representations
The literature on external representations (Larkin & Simon 1987; Kirsh 2010; Tversky 2019) establishes that externalization is not merely convenient but cognitively transformative. Diagrams don't just store information more accessibly; they change the computational nature of the task. Information that requires search in textual formats can be perceptually indexed in diagrams.
For argument analysis, this suggests that spatial representation of argument structure could make patterns visible that would require laborious inference in linear text. Synthetica's canvas environment makes argument structure diagrammatic: claims have spatial positions, connections are visible, clustering emerges from proximity. Users can see the shape of their argument rather than merely reading its sequential presentation.
Part VI: Social Science Methodology and Metascience
21. The Infrastructure of Quality
The metascience literature (Ioannidis 2005; Simmons et al. 2011; Nosek et al. 2022) documents systematic failures in how contemporary research is conducted, evaluated, and published. P-hacking, publication bias, inadequate statistical power, failure to replicate—these problems afflict entire fields and undermine confidence in published findings.
From the perspective of epistemic technology, these failures are infrastructure failures. The current infrastructure for quality control—prepublication peer review, post-publication replication—catches problems too late or not at all. By the time a paper is published, the sunk costs of career advancement make correction difficult. By the time replication failures accumulate, the original finding has already shaped policy and further research.
Synthetica aims to intervene earlier in this pipeline. If researchers can see the structural vulnerabilities of their arguments before submission—the underpowered studies, the undisclosed degrees of freedom, the unaddressed objections—they can strengthen their work before it enters the publication system. The tool doesn't solve the incentive problems that produce bad science, but it can reduce the information asymmetries that allow problematic work to pass undetected.
22. Standards as Social Constructs
King, Keohane, and Verba's (1994) Designing Social Inquiry established methodological standards for qualitative social science by making explicit the inferential logic that underlies good case-study research. Their intervention illustrates a general pattern: methodological standards are social constructs that must be articulated, debated, and ultimately internalized by research communities.
Epistemic technology participates in this process of articulation. When Synthetica's lenses assess objection engagement against field-specific standards, those standards become explicit rather than tacit. Users see what counts as adequate engagement in their field—200+ words of substantive analysis, not mere acknowledgment—and can calibrate their practice accordingly.
Part VII: Evolutionary Foundations
23. Why Evolution Matters for Reasoning Technology
The evolutionary perspective might seem remote from practical concerns about reasoning tools. But understanding how human cognitive capacities evolved illuminates both their power and their limits.
Mercier and Sperber's (2011, 2017) argumentative theory of reasoning proposes that human reasoning evolved not to track truth but to win arguments—to produce and evaluate justifications in social contexts. This would explain why we are better at finding flaws in others' arguments than in our own: the selection pressure was adversarial. From this perspective, institutions like peer review work because they put reasoning to its evolved purpose: evaluating others' claims.
Epistemic technology can leverage this insight. If we are naturally better critics of others' arguments than of our own, tools that present our own arguments as if they were someone else's—through adversarial perspectives, through steelmanned objections—might access cognitive capacities that first-person reflection leaves dormant.
24. Cultural Evolution and Cumulative Knowledge
The cultural evolution literature (Henrich 2015; Boyd & Richerson 2005) shows how human populations accumulate knowledge across generations in ways that no individual could. Each generation inherits the discoveries of the previous, makes incremental improvements, and passes the improved version forward. Complex technologies like bow-and-arrow hunting or fermented food preservation emerge through this process of cumulative cultural evolution rather than through individual invention.
Scientific knowledge is a paradigmatic case of cumulative culture. Each researcher builds on what came before; the literature is a shared repository of findings, methods, and conceptual frameworks. But this cumulative process depends on accurate transmission: later researchers must understand what earlier researchers actually claimed and demonstrated.
Epistemic technology can strengthen the fidelity of this transmission. By representing argument structure explicitly, tools like Synthetica can help researchers accurately characterize the claims and evidence in work they cite, avoiding the citation distortions and misattributions that accumulate over long citation chains.

9. Conclusion: Toward Infrastructure for Collective Reasoning
The problem that animates this research program is, at bottom, the problem of how societies reason together under conditions of disagreement, complexity, and uncertainty. Markets, courts, legislatures, peer review—these institutions for collective reasoning are the infrastructure through which human societies process information and make decisions.
